  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviour. Undiagnosed and untreated ADHD in adults can lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and other problems.

Treatment for ADHD includes medications, psychotherapy, and treatment for mental health conditions that co-occur along with ADHD.

Many psychiatrists and physicians who prescribe medications for the treatment of ADHD require an assessment and report from a psychologist or other qualified mental health professional prior to initiating medication treatment.

Following the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance Practice Guidelines, diagnosing ADHD requires a thorough assessment including current and historical (i.e., childhood) ADHD symptoms, a clinical assessment for other current and historical psychiatric conditions, completion of symptom scales, review of childhood school reports and previous cognitive or psychological assessment reports, and the assessment of childhood symptoms via a collateral source (e.g., interview with a caregiver from the individual’s childhood). The psychologist must then interpret and integrate the various sources of information and provide a report detailing the findings. This report can then be used for treatment planning with your therapist, doctor, or psychiatrist.

Adult ADHD assessments typically require 2.5-3 hours meeting with the psychologist, 30 minutes interview with a collateral source, and 2.5-3 hours of administrative work (e.g., preparation, scoring, interpretation, and creation of the report). The fee associated with this service starts at $1450, which can be paid in full at the first meeting, or split across two payments. This fee may be covered by some benefits plans.
